BREAKING: TENSION GRIPS LAGOS ASSEMBLY AS ARMED SECURITY TAKE OVER

By Jonah Israel

Armed security personnel have taken control of the Lagos State House of Assembly complex, creating a tense atmosphere. Lawmakers are scheduled to hold an emergency plenary session today, Monday, March 3, 2025.

The heavy security presence, which has been in place for about two weeks, was reinforced early this morning. Newly elected Speaker Mojisola Meranda is reportedly set to resign to make way for a new speaker from the west zone, in line with the zoning arrangement.

The Rapid Response Squad and armed police officers have taken strategic positions around the complex, thoroughly searching all visitors, including staff, before allowing them access. A staff member, who wished to remain anonymous, described the atmosphere as "very tense" with heavy security presence.

After weeks of political maneuvering, President Bola Tinubu and top APC leaders reached a resolution over the weekend on the crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly. The decision, which followed high-level meetings, confirms Mudashiru Obasa's removal as Speaker, allowing him to resign instead.

Prominent party leaders, including Bisi Akande, Olusegun Osoba, Dele Alake, and a former Lagos commissioner, were involved in the discussions with Tinubu.
