A notorious leader of the Lakurawa criminal group, Maigemu, has been neutralized during a joint operation by security forces and local vigilantes in Kebbi State.
Alhaji Abdulrahman Zagga, the Director of Security at the Cabinet Office in Birnin Kebbi, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday. He disclosed that Maigemu was killed on Thursday in Kuncin Baba, a remote and rugged area within the Arewa Local Government Area, following a fierce gun battle.
The operation, which was based on actionable intelligence, saw the combined efforts of security personnel and local vigilantes successfully eliminate the notorious criminal. This comes just one week after the Governor of Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris, visited the communities of Bagiza and Rausa Kade to console residents after six individuals were killed by suspected Lakurawa cattle rustlers.
During his visit, Governor Idris reassured the local populace of enhanced security measures and swift reinforcements to tackle the increasing criminal activities in the region.
Zagga commended the governor for his steadfast commitment to improving security and for ensuring continuous logistical support for law enforcement agencies. He further urged residents to stay alert, collaborate with security forces, and promptly report any suspicious activities to aid in the restoration of peace.
The Lakurawa group, which is believed to have ties with extremist organizations, has been implicated in a series of violent attacks across Northern Nigeria, with particular focus on Sokoto and Kebbi states.
