In a shocking turn of events, Mudashiru Obasa, the ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has declared his resumption as the parliament's leader. Obasa made this announcement on Thursday after returning to the assembly complex, accompanied by police and State Security Service details, for the first time since his removal on January 13.
Obasa's statement, "I've resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly," has sparked controversy, especially given the ongoing leadership crisis in the assembly. The crisis began after Obasa's removal and the subsequent election of Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker.
The assembly has been divided, with over 90% of lawmakers accusing Obasa of poor leadership, lateness, high-handedness, and abuse of office. In an effort to resolve the crisis, top All Progressives Congress leaders, including former governors, held meetings with stakeholders and members of the assembly. These meetings suggested that both Obasa and Meranda might step down to allow a new Speaker to take the helm.
The situation took another turn when the security aides of Speaker Meranda were withdrawn, paving the way for Obasa's return. Chief Muraina Taiwo, a member of the Governors Advisory Council, revealed that party leaders are considering one of the seven lawmakers from Lagos West as the new Speaker.
