OSUN CRISIS: COURT ORDERS OSIEC TO COMMENCE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION

By Enekorogha Godbless

A high court in Osun State has given the green light to the State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) to conduct the local government election scheduled for Saturday. The court's decision was in response to a suit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against OSIEC and its chairman, Hashim Abioye.

According to the court, there is a vacancy in the 30 local government areas of the state, citing a previous judgment by the Federal High Court. The court also noted that the election conducted by OSIEC in October 2022 was invalidated, and the elected officials were sacked by the Federal High Court.

The court upheld the PDP's prayers and directed security agencies, including the police, army, and Department of State Security Services (DSS), to provide adequate security during and after the election.

This development comes amidst controversy surrounding the local government election in Osun State. The Federal Government had earlier directed the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, to suspend the election, citing a Court of Appeal ruling that reinstated local government chairmen elected under the previous administration.
