Map of AfricaThe United States has released its 2025 Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) list, excluding the United Kingdom, Africa, and several other countries. The programme, which allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the US for tourism or business without a visa, has undergone significant updates.
The exclusion of the UK from the programme may come as a surprise, given the country's historical ties with the US. However, the US Bureau of Consular Affairs has stated that the UK remains eligible under specific conditions. The exclusion of African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, is also notable.
The 2025 VWP list includes 40 countries, with Romania being the latest addition. The US has emphasized its commitment to enhancing security checks and prioritizing countries with strong diplomatic ties and border security standards.
According to the US Bureau of Consular Affairs, the VWP allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the US for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa. However, travellers must have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval prior to travel and meet all requirements.
The new VWP programme introduces policy updates on permit eligibility and revisions to the list of participating countries, as well as new travel policies. This update simplifies visa-free entry into the US for millions worldwide, making business, tourism, and transit travel more accessible.
