The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed a fire incident on the Trans-Niger Delta Pipeline, operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), but assured residents that the situation is under control.
The incident occurred on Monday night, with the fire later being reported by a surveillance team during a routine night patrol. Following the report, SPDC management swiftly initiated safety protocols, including the shutdown of the affected pipeline, to prevent further escalation. Police authorities confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the community or the environment.
Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Public Relations Officer of Rivers State, confirmed the fire occurred at the border between Kpor and Bodo communities, and emphasized that the situation had been contained without posing additional risk to residents.
"The Rivers State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that a fire incident occurred at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) operated Trans Niger Delta Pipeline. During a routine night patrol, security operatives observed the incident and promptly alerted SPDC management. The latter initiated necessary safety protocols, including shutting down the affected pipeline. As a result of swift intervention, the situation is now under control, and there is no further threat to residents or the environment," Iringe-Koko stated.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with police confirming the arrest of two individuals for questioning in connection to the incident. The authorities have not disclosed whether the fire was caused by an explosion, a spill, or a militant attack.
Iringe-Koko added, "The Rivers State Police Command has commenced a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire. In connection with this, two individuals have been taken in for questioning as part of efforts to uncover any potential act of sabotage."
The police further reassured residents that they are committed to maintaining security in the state and will continue to pursue all criminal activities with the goal of bringing perpetrators to justice.
The Rivers State Police Command has urged the public to remain calm and vigilant, while assuring them that law enforcement is working to protect lives and property.
