Femi Falana and Gen. Ibrahim BabangidaA Prominent human rights advocate Femi Falana, SAN, has initiated legal proceedings against former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), for his unlawful incarceration in 1993. This development follows IBB's recent expression of remorse over the nullification of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Falana, who was apprehended and detained alongside fellow pro-democracy activists, including the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi and the late Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, characterized his detention as "a blatant abuse of authority" and "a gross infringement on fundamental rights." He argued that IBB's acknowledgment of regret is insufficient and that he must face the consequences of his actions.
Falana recounted the circumstances surrounding his detention, stating, "We were penalized for disseminating the truth about the election outcome." He emphasized that IBB's decision to nullify the election was a "devastating blow" to Nigeria's democratic aspirations.
Falana also criticized IBB's proposal to establish a Presidential Library, arguing that only democratically elected leaders possess the legitimacy to undertake such an endeavor. "It is unprecedented for a former military ruler to establish a presidential library. What historical significance could such an institution possibly hold? A president is elected by the people, whereas a military dictator seizes power," Falana asserted.
As Falana pursues justice against IBB, Nigerians eagerly await the outcome, hoping that this development will ultimately bring closure to the June 12 saga.
