IBB'S ANNULMENT OF JUNE 12 ELECTION: A BLATANT ATTEMPT TO SUBVERT DEMOCRACY

Comrade Godbless and Gen. Ibrahim Babangida

In a recent interview with Nigeria Daily Chronicles, renowned political commentator and human rights activist, Comrade Enekorogha Godbless, from Ayakoromo community, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, has condemned former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida's (IBB) annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. Comrade Godbless described IBB's actions as "a blatant attempt to subvert democracy" and "a 32-year cover-up" that has had a lasting impact on Nigeria's history.

He further emphasized that IBB's decision to annul the election was a clear attempt to undermine the democratic process. He also criticized IBB's recent admission of regret, stating it was an attempt to rewrite history, but it will not absolve him of his crimes. "If IBB is not held accountable for his actions, history will continue to repeat itself," He warned.

The human rights activist highlighted the devastating consequences of IBB's actions, which have caused socio-economic and psychological pains that cannot be undone. "Saying the truth now will not bring back the lost years, but it is a step towards justice, accountability, and healing," he added.

He stated that IBB's attempt to nullify democracy will not be forgotten, and that Nigerians will continue to demand justice and accountability. He emphasized that the country owes it to the victims, their families, and the nation to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice.

As  he aptly put it, "We owe it to the victims, their families, and the nation to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice."

"This will serve as a stark warning to all political elites who disregard the democratic process. IBB's memoir does not grant him immunity from his past actions, and inviting prominent political figures to his book launch does not equate to a presidential pardon. The law is blind to age, and the rule of law must prevail," he emphasized.
